30 years
Thirty years of Bulmarket — from a small gas storage yard in Ruse to an industrial group operating in eight countries.
ScrollA polygonal silhouette of a rearing horse — the emblem of the anniversary edition
Act 1
The story begins with the acquisition of one small gas depot. Thirty years later, around 1% of Bulgaria's gross domestic product is created here.
Energy runs through Bulmarket's bloodstream not merely as a sector but as the character of its growth. Today the Group brings together the production and trading of fuels and by-products, transport and logistics, and heavy industry.
Ruse proved to be the decisive choice. Geopolitical instability and disrupted supply chains showed just how important a logistics hub the city is. Two smaller rail companies in Romania and one in Serbia made Bulmarket a significant carrier in the region.
The need for wagons and tank cars, in turn, accelerated the building of the LVZ engineering works — in under four years.
The Group's natural horizon reaches beyond Bulgaria.
Act 2
We look for niches and we do not follow beaten paths
Thirty years ago we started with a small gas storage yard. Gas was only just arriving in Bulgaria, but it gave us the energy that drives us to this day.
We had no ready-made path, but we sensed that this was the future. Today Bulmarket is an industrial group — a leading producer and trader of biofuels in Europe, second in Bulgaria in rail freight, an active participant in the global energy cycle.
But if I had to sum up these three decades in one word, that word is not growth. It is character. We came through financial crises, a pandemic, a war, the transformation of markets. There were moments when we had to choose between fear and action. Every time, we chose action.
Ruse was no accident. It is a city with a strategic position and a European spirit. Ruse gave us our beginning. The Danube — our direction. Europe — our horizon.
Our real strength is not the assets. It is the people. Thanks to them the company does not merely grow — it endures.
In stormy times some falter and others wait. The brave spread their wings and use the wind. Over these 30 years Bulmarket has proved that it is one of the brave.

Act 4
They call the Bulmarket Group “the Quiet Giant”.
Diversification built as a mutually reinforcing ecosystem: production feeds trading, trading fills transport, transport serves production.
This measured approach proved its worth through three major crises — Covid, the war in Ukraine and the Iranian crisis.
The maturity of a company is measured by its ability to stay stable in an unstable environment.
Momchil Boyadzhiev Chief Executive Officer of Bulmarket Group AD and Astra Finance ADI joined at a moment when the conflict in Ukraine was in full force and reshaping commodity markets. In Bulgaria one government followed another, the European Union was in crisis — and inside the Group investments were being planned years ahead.
2020
While the world was frozen with fear, Bulmarket acquired the Locomotive and Wagon Works in Ruse. Five years later the Group has an engineering company in an exceptional place from a logistics point of view.
2022
Russia halted gas deliveries to Bulgaria and industry had to switch to LPG. Bulmarket was in a position to supply it and won many new customers.
2026
The year opens with a fresh test — the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices move between 86 and 110 dollars a barrel.
What matters is recognising in good time the opportunities that appear in moments of challenge, and having the courage to act.

Act 5
The production core
The production heart of the Group. A capacity of 400,000 tonnes of biodiesel a year, 10% for the domestic market and 90% for export.
Deyan Stankov
Manager of Astra Bioplant EOOD and member of the Board of Directors of Astra Finance AD
| Year | Produced | Traded |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 137 | 886 |
| 2021 | 202 | 1013 |
| 2022 | 267 | 1776 |
| 2023 | 303 | 1464 |
| 2024 | 371 | 1928 |
| 2025 | 362 | 1525 |
| 2026 | 405 | — |
| 2027 | 476 | — |
What is produced comes from Slivo Pole, Ober and Provadia. What is traded is the Group's total sales — own production plus volumes traded through Bulgaria and Switzerland, which is why it is several times larger. 2026 and 2027 are forecasts.
After 2022 the European energy market changed drastically, and biodiesel felt it through 2023 and 2024. Only in 2025 did the market recover its former volumes. It was a tense period.
On the other hand, biofuel entered shipping and, as SAF, aviation. We set up a trading company in Geneva — that is the heart of the fuel trade, where all the information in the world is concentrated.
Production has a serious bearing on Bulgarian agriculture: the Group buys up a large part of the rapeseed and sunflower harvest and produces meal for animal feed. Making biodiesel leaves almost no waste at all.
The plant at Slivo Pole is undergoing a complete modernisation with a new process line. The €25m investment adds 180,000 tonnes of annual capacity and lifts product quality to the highest European standards. Alongside it, a straw-fired steam plant is being built — our own energy instead of dependence on the traditional sources.
A refinery for waste feedstocks — used vegetable and animal oils — has also been built. It opens a new niche: co-processing, in which the feedstocks produced are blended directly with crude oil. The division is strategic for the Group's position in the segment of lower-carbon fuels.
Astra Storage in Devnya is expanding fourfold — the largest investment of 2026. Storage facilities for hazardous fuels are an important part of the business, especially in a crisis. Together with the positions in the Mediterranean region, the Netherlands and Belgium, the expansion means direct access to the main European markets and greater operational flexibility in managing volumes.
As at 2023, before the fourfold expansion of Astra Storage. Separately the Group leases over 123,000 cubic metres and operates 23,400 square metres of open yard for general cargo.
Crises do not only change the environment. They show who is ready to adapt, to take responsibility and to keep moving forward.

| 2025 | 2447 | 433 | 1347 | 238 |
The four companies together carried over 4.4 million net tonnes in 2025.
The European Union treats rail as the greenest and most strategic form of transport. Its share is set to grow — it is safer, cheaper, and with modernised infrastructure it will also be faster. That matters especially for the Balkans as an overland corridor between Asia and Europe.
We invested in new locomotives — Siemens Smartron and Softronic — and built our own repair depot in Ruse. In a sector where time out of service turns straight into loss, that is a critical advantage.
In mineral fuels we also took a logistical step that widens our geography: deliveries by large gas carriers direct from the USA to the Black Sea.
Logistics does not end at the rail. Port Bulmarket on the Danube at Ruse is the other end of the chain — in 2024 and 2025 it handled over 730,000 tonnes of cargo a year, nearly 30% more than in 2023.

LVZ 1866
The revival of the Locomotive and Wagon Works 1866 combines the restoration of a building from 1866 with a modern production and repair centre.
The industrial park is being developed on 176 decares with over 40,000 square metres of built-up area and 12.5 km of internal railway lines. By April–May 2026 the facilities will be ready for full operation — the workshops are finished, the infrastructure is what remains.
The repair shop is working and the new-build shop is at the prototype stage, including a new wagon for liquid bulk. A specialised gassing and degassing bay has also been built, which lets the works operate as a one stop shop.
The works is certified to TSI, ECM, ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001.
The Group's own locomotives alone number more than 100 — enough that the works has its internal workload secured before the first outside order arrives. And outside orders and interest are already there.
The specialised gassing and degassing bay, the locomotive wash and the infrastructure for handling propylene, LPG and fuel oil occupy an area of close to 9 decares. That is where the phrase that carries weight in the trade comes from: one stop shop — a complete service in a single place, which shortens the customer's process cycles and costs. The licence for the works' own type of wagon for Light Mineral Oils, 98 and 88 cubic metres, is in its final stage, and the next step is the gas-carrier line.
I always wanted the Bulmarket Group to have heavy engineering. When the chance came to acquire LVZ, I did not think about it for long.

The invisible factor
Svetoslav Parvanov
Corporate security is invisible when it works well, but critical to the stability of the business — especially in times of crisis.
The change starts with the most basic thing of all: safety and personal responsibility. Over time, security stopped being an externally imposed requirement and became an internal conviction.
Over the 15 years I have been part of the Group, the growth of the security culture is plain to see — not only as systems and procedures, but as an attitude. That does not happen through one-off campaigns; it happens through persistence: clear rules, consistent enforcement, training and personal example. Persistence is what turns a requirement into a standard.
One of the most important balances is the one between control and trust. Trust is not built with declarations but with behaviour — proved over time and above all at critical moments. The more mature the organisation, the less need there is for additional control.
Cybersecurity is now an everyday reality, and cyberattacks are an industry. Our approach is pragmatic: minimise exposure to the public network, use our own information resources.
Security is directly bound up with the durability of skills: we do not simply train people, we build patterns of behaviour that still hold under stress. It is a good sign that the young colleagues joining the Group increasingly arrive with solid basic preparation — a result of the general technological environment and their everyday practice. Thirty years of growth also mean thirty years of adaptation.

In practice
Technology is only part of the picture. The human being is at once the greatest asset and the potential breach in any system. That is why security begins with awareness, not with the firewall.

Act 7
The strength has always come from difference gathered around a common purpose. From engineers and chemists to traders, trainers and administrative teams.
Thirty years of Bulmarket is a story of people. People who create, who keep the knowledge, who pass on experience and give the human face to the scale.

From 951 people in 2020 to 1,826 in 2026 — in seven years the Group has almost doubled its team.
Today 35 outstanding chemists work at Bulmarket, and with them we achieve competitiveness on a world scale. However fast the requirements grow, we meet them 100% every time.

Relationships, communities, belonging
For thirty years Bulmarket has been a story of people. The strength has always come from difference gathered around a common purpose — from engineers and chemists to traders, trainers, specialists and administrative teams. That diversity builds a community in which trust, responsibility and the drive to develop are shared ground.
Everyone brings their own experience, character and professional passion. We work with our people as partners with a shared outlook — and that, not the assets, is where the Group's real resilience comes from.
Close to 2,000 people are part of the Group today. The sporting and corporate events, the training and the internal communication are not an addition to the work — they are how that many people remain one community.
People stay because the place matters and because everything is met together. Over time they become the ones you rely on not only at work but in the hard moments too. That is how an environment is built in which belonging is not declared but felt — in the trust, in the support and in the years spent side by side.
Nikolay Zhelev
Administrative Director of Bulmarket Group AD
For an industrial group, scale is measured not only in assets and output but in the ability to manage people, processes and knowledge so that growth remains sustainable and does not lose its human centre. Bulmarket is among the most significant employers in Ruse — a city with an entrepreneurial spirit and a tradition of modernity. But the Group's real resilience comes from the way we work with our people — as partners with a shared outlook.
The labour market today is the other way round — people choose the companies. That calls for a clear employer value and mature leadership. Bulmarket is a preferred choice for the stability and the long-term perspective it offers, but also for an environment in which initiative and development are valued. The new generations look for meaning, flexibility and room to grow — and it is exactly that expectation we have to meet.
Automation and digitalisation are tools, not substitutes for people. Our direction is not fewer people but better prepared people — with technology that eases the work and raises safety while leaving the human being at the centre. The role of HR is changing too: from an administrative function to a bridge between the business and its people, because there is no sustainable growth without sustainable teams.
A licensed vocational training centre of our own — created because an industry on this scale cannot wait for its skilled people to arrive from outside.
The spark for a profession is lit by example, by practice and by prospects. That is why in 2020 we founded a Vocational Training Centre — the Bulmarket Academy — for the qualification and requalification of employees, students and people looking for a new professional direction.
The Bulmarket Academy works in partnership with the Ruse Labour Office and with the Ruse Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The aim is clear — opportunities for work, training and youth employment for school students, in a place where industry and school rarely meet on their own.
The circle closes inside the Group: training, practice in a real working environment and a professional career. Professions are being revived with a new, modern reading — interest in the trades of the locomotive driver and the engineer is visibly growing.
Act 8
Five major goals by 2030.
Measured against the scale of Europe, Bulmarket is a small company. Everything we have built as assets, we have built by our own effort. Today we are one of the large companies in Bulgaria.
Future growth is determined by the scale of one's thinking. The experience of the first 30 years shows that our new projects have to be large ones. A large project and a small one take roughly the same time to develop, but the effect is many times greater.
The next 30 — to think on the scale of the world and to work at the speed of the world's processes. The opportunities are in front of us.
